Student Scholarship and Publications
More than 95% of the authors on our publications are Howard University COM medical students. Through a collaborative, team-based research environment, students actively contribute to every stage of the research process.
This collaborative approach enables students to participate in multiple research projects, increasing opportunities for peer-reviewed publications while developing the critical thinking, scientific writing, and teamwork skills essential for careers in medicine, biomedical research, and academic leadership. Scholarly publication is a cornerstone of medical education, providing students with the experience and credentials needed to become the next generation of physician-scientists and healthcare leaders.

Outcomes Research Center Publications
Understanding a Publication Citation: In biomedical research, the first author is typically the student or trainee who made the primary scientific contribution, while the last author is usually the faculty mentor, senior investigator, and often the corresponding author for questions, collaborations, or additional information. Learning how to interpret a publication citation helps students recognize research contributions and understand the collaborative nature of scientific publication.
