How to Apply

 All applicants must register through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP – www.nrmp.org) and submit application materials through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) of the Association of American Medical Colleges (www.aamc.org).

International Applicants

We only accept J1 visas sponsored by ECFMG.

Candidates who graduate from medical school outside of the U.S. must have:

  • A currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or
  • Have completed a Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school in the U.S. or Canada or
  • Graduated from a medical school approved by the World Health Organization
  • Three months clinical experience with evaluation in the United States or Canada

We do not accept IMGs for observerships or externships.

Oladunni Filani, MD

Program Director, Family Medicine Residency Training Program

Dr. Filani graduated from University of Ibadan in Nigeria and was trained in Howard University Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program.  Dr. Filani also did a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Maryland.  He is a Board Certified family physician and also serves as Medical Team Physician for Howard University Athletics

Mark Johnson, MD

Dr. Mark Johnson graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey(Rutgers) in New Jersey.  Dr. Johnson also completed a MPH program from the School of Public Health – University of North Carolina. Dr. Johnson is the Chair of the Department of Community and Family Medicine.

Krishnan Narasimhan, MD

Dr. Narasimhan received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in 1998 and completed a fellowship in Primary Care Health Policy at Georgetown University.  Dr. Narasimhan is the facilitator of Journal Club in the Family Medicine Residency Program and also the Clerkship Director in the Department of Community and Family Medicine.

Dea Sloan, MD

Dr. Sloan received her M.D. from University of Maryland in May 2014.  Dr. Sloan also got an MPH from Johns Hopkins in August 2015. Dr. Sloan works with the OB and Pediatrics curriculums in the Family Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Wilson received his MD from Howard University.  He also was trained in the Howard University Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program.  Dr. Wilson works with the Practice Management curriculum in the residency program

Eligibility:

Minimum eligibility criteria for consideration by our program include:

 

1. Graduation from a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical school on the United States or Canada or World Health Organization approved medical school for International Medical Graduates (IMG).

2. Completion of medical school training outside the United States with completion of a Fifth Pathway Program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.

3. No more than 2 attempts at any of the USMLE Examination Steps. All USMLE

examinations must have been taken within the last five years.

4. Completion of all elements of ECFMG Certification with proof ( International Medical

Graduates only).  Current final year US Medical students are exempt from this requirement but must have passed USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2 prior to beginning residency.

5. Three month clinical experience with evaluation in the United States or Canada

Preference Criteria (in addition to above):

  1. Medical school graduation within 5 years
  2. Passing USMLE 1 & 2 on first attempt with a minimum passing score of 194.
  3. Demonstrated interest in Family Medicine
  4. Research experience

  5.  Passing step 3 not required but preferred for US Graduates and International

Medical Graduates who have already completed medical school.
