231-300. Biology of Pathogens I. 5 crs. Review of factors and mechanisms utilized by pathogenic bacteria, fungi and protozoan parasites as determinants of their pathogenicity. Roles of plasmids, exotoxins, extracellular enzymes and outer wall components that mediate virulence and microbial adherence.
231-303. Biology of Pathogens II . 4 crs. The course is designed to provide a strong foundation in prokaryotic molecular genetics, protozoan virulence, antimicrobial agents, and bacterial pathogenesis.
231-304. Cellular and molecular immunology. 4 crs. This course focuses on mechanisms of immunological processes and emphasizes skills in problem-solving and experimental design. Prerequisites: immunology, cell biology, biochemistry or equivalent.
231-305. Cell biology. 3 crs. Review of the molecular and biochemical structure and function of eukaryotic cells. Prerequisite: biochemistry and general biology.
231-307. Virology. 4 crs. Review the basic principles of virology, including assays of viral infectivity and analysis of biosynthesis of viral gene products.
231-413. Molecular biology. 4 crs. This course focuses on recombinant DNA technology and instrumentation, utilizing current molecular techniques to study selected recombinant molecules. Prerequisite: 231-300, 231-303 and biochemistry.
231-417. Seminar. 3 crs. A facilitation course imparting skills of communication of scientific information to a body of peers.
231-418. Special topics. 3-6 crs. Laboratory experiences for students of various methodologies and techniques employed in research laboratories.
