Education

The educational objective of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Howard University Hospital is to provide an academic environment that promotes a structured educational experience. It is dedicated to effective and efficient patient care, stressing a graduate experience of resident responsibility.

The faculty is dedicated to active participation in your education, with emphasis on developing your independent thought and decision-making capabilities.

Upon graduating from this program, you will be able to enter the practice of obstetrics and gynecology, obtain fellowship positions in subspecialties, actively participate in research, and pursue academic careers.

The program utilizes the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) booklet entitled “Educational Objectives for Residents in Obstetrics & Gynecology” as a scaffolding to establish the core curriculum. There Is weekly protected didactic time which includes didactic lectures, Grand Rounds, journal club, morbidity and mortality conference, and simulation training.

There is a structured research program that involves a rotation in the second year to ensure the appropriate development of a project that can be carried out through the remainder of the program, ending with a presentation at the time of graduation. We encourage additional scholarly activity throughout the program.

Residents are required to participate in the yearly CREOG In-service training examination. The results of this examination are used to identify areas of weakness in the resident’s knowledge. These areas will be addressed with special readings, direct tutoring, or the creation of specialized study plans.

7) Journal Club – Residents will present and discuss journal articles with faculty input and supervision

8) CREOG Review Series – Review Lectures for High Yield Topics for the CREOG exam, independent Study time, or group Question Bank review

9) Simulation – Residents will utilize the State of the Art Howard University Hospital Simulation Center to practice Vaginal Delivery, Laceration Repair, Laparoscopy Skills

10) Research Series – The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has partnered with the Department of Surgery for an interactive series of lectures, presentations, and independent research time to advance the Research output for the Obstetrics and Gynecology department.
