Pipeline Programs

Freshmen Orientation

  • Purpose: To provide academic orientation to the medical curriculum for all entering Freshman students.

  • Program: Learning skills - critical thinking, problem solving, time management and exam-taking workshops - are presented during orientation week.

  • Participants: Entering freshman medical students.

Preliminary Academic Reinforcement Program (PARP)

  • Purpose: To provide academic orientation to the medical curriculum for selected incoming students to facilitate their transition from undergraduate study and entry into medical school.

  • Program: The six-week structured summer program includes academic material from the first-year medical curriculum, learning skills, counseling, group study and individualized tutoring by MedSTARS Leaders. Successful performance guarantees admission to the freshman year.

  • Participants: Prospective students are selected by the College of Medicine’s Admissions Committee. This program is funded by HCOP.

Behavioral Health Preliminary Academic Reinforcement Program (Be_PARP)

  • Purpose: To engage, recruit, and train economically and academically disadvantaged students in behavioral health.

  • Program: Two- Phased six week mentored research and training program funded by the Health Careers Opportunity Program grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration.

    • Phase 1 - Designed to prepare the student for behavioral science research

    • Phase 2 - Four weeks mentored research, participants will engage in multidisciplinary research projects address to behavioral health disparities.

  • Participants: All enrolled medical students.

Academic Analysis, Research & Tracking Services

  • Purpose: To evaluate student performance and to select and apply appropriate resources for corrective or supportive action to enhance that performance.

  • Program: Assistance for developing study, time management and exam-taking skills is provided; referral is made to other University services for additional counseling.

  • Participants: Services are available to all enrolled medical students. Hospital support services, as needed.

Academic Support

  • Purpose: To enhance academic performance and retention of students. To provide tutorial assistance for medical students.

  • Program: Students participate in seminars to strengthen study and learning skills, including time management and organization techniques, and eliminate stress; students also reinforce study of the basic science curriculum through self-paced review. Individualized tutoring and counseling support are provided for students who require these services. Medical student tutors, selected on the basis of academic performance and personal traits, offer individualized and group tutorial sessions upon request.

  • Participants: Medical students at all levels of the undergraduate program.

MedSTAR

  • Purpose: To enhance academic achievement, retention and graduation of students. To provide academic guidance for medical students.

  • Program: Students participate in academic reinforcement sessions to cover material presented in the first two years of the medical curriculum through self-paced review. MedSTARS (Medical Student Taught Academic Review Sessions) Leaders, selected on the basis of academic performance and personal traits, offer individualized and group review sessions and individual sessions upon request. MedSTARS Leaders are funded by the federal government’s Health Career’s Opportunity Program (HCOP) of the USDHHS, HRSA. Individual advisory and counseling support to strengthen study and learning skills, including time management and organization techniques, concept mapping and stress control, are provided by OME staff for students who require these services.

  • Participants: Medical students are supported at all levels of the MD program.

Summer Directed Study Program (SDSP)

The Summer Directed Study Program (SDSP) is designed to enhance preparation for further medical study and increase retention of students enrolled in the College of Medicine. A student may be eligible to attend SDSP if he/she has no more than two (2) transcript unsatisfactory grades during the freshman year and during the sophomore year.

USMLE Step 1 Reviews

  • Purpose: To provide structured review to improve performance on USMLE Step I (Pass required for promotion).

  • Program: Self-assessment examinations are offered to help students to set priorities for review; other activities may include faculty review sessions and medical student tutorials.

  • Participants: Students who have taken but have not passed USMLE Step 1.

Academic Mentoring & Counseling

  • Purpose: To contact students with problems contributing to poor academic performance and apply appropriate resources for corrective or supportive action to improve course performance.

  • Program: Direct support in developing study, time management an exam-taking skills is provided; referral is made to other University support services as needed.

  • Participants: Services available to all enrolled medical students.

This program is administered by the Office of Medical Education, which schedules informal, small-group, and individual tutorials during the regular academic year. These sessions are intended to enable freshman and sophomore medical students to improve their performance in the required subjects by frequent review and discussion. In addition, workshops aid students in acquiring techniques of organizing information for individual review and content analysis and in the development of critical thinking skills. These workshops are offered during freshman orientation and during the regular academic year.

Learning Resource Center

  • Purpose: To provide multi-media complementary instruction and self-directed review for the medical curriculum.

  • Program: Video- and audio tapes, slides, monographs, and computer-aided preparation are available to prepare for course and board exams. Materials are offered for basic science subjects, clinical disciplines, and study skills.

  • Participants: All enrolled medical students and HUH residents.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

Visiting Students

Student exchange opportunities are available to fourth-year medical students from other U.S. and Canadian medical schools which are accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. Clinical electives provide a special opportunity for the College's students to enjoy contact with other medical students in the course of their clinical training. Students must be adequately immunized and also have health and malpractice insurance.
