Office of Research

The Office of Research facilitates the development and expansion of comprehensive biomedical research programs in the College of Medicine in keeping with Howard University's goal of maintaining its status as a Research Level I institution. This office serves as the central research administrative unit of the College of Medicine and its staff performs the following general functions on a continuing basis:

1. Assists the faculty in the planning, development and the conduct of scientifically meritorious biomedical research programs relating to diseases and disorders effecting the nation's health through the utilization of research, training and service grants and/or contracts.

2. Provides administrative assistance to the faculty in the preparation of grant and contract proposals submitted to external grantors.

3. Determines and certifies through liaisons with faculty and staff and appropriate college and university committees that all proposals and research programs comply with university, state, and federal policies relative to the requirements for safeguarding human rights, humane treatment of animals and the utilization of biohazardous and radioactive materials.

4. Initiates reviews, analyses, and evaluations of the research programs of the College of Medicine as well as those of other components of the university to assure scientifically high standards.

5. Initiates or assists in the initiation of the planning, development and implementation of strategies for improving current programs and for initiating new programs within the Health Sciences Center, in general, and the College of Medicine in particular. This includes making an assessment of the budgetary needs of such programs and seeking external funds to support them.

6. Administers extramurally and intramurally funded interdisciplinary biomedical research and training programs.

7 Provides administrative support to all College of Medicine committees representing research interests, and other committees as appropriate.

8. Provides representation for the College of Medicine, and as indicated the Health Sciences Center, on university-wide committees concerned with the development of research policy, planning, and implementation of new programs and the review and evaluation of current programs.

9. Provides representation for the College of Medicine and the University on both intramural and extramural forums at all levels where research planning, policy and programs are on the agenda.

10. Provides representation for the College of Medicine on all university-wide regulatory committees.

11. Mediates and negotiates on behalf of the Dean of the College of Medicine and maintains good public relations with the University administration and other academic units of the university.

12. Serves as the repository of information concerning all research, training, and service programs of the College of Medicine that are funded from extramural sources.

13. Provides administrative support in the preparation of reports for review of the College of Medicine's research program by external, as well as internal, evaluation committees.

14. Maintains liaisons with various public and private grantors whose missions are related to the promotion of biomedical research, service, and/or training.
