Tuition & Fees

The annual tuition for freshman medical students for the 2008-2009 academic year is $30,015.

The additional fees for freshman medical students are as follows:

Students enrolled in the Summer Directed Study Program are charged $480 for one course and $960 for two courses.

Tuition and fees are subject to change upon vote of the Board of Trustees of Howard University.

Rent

Other than tuition and fees, the largest expenditure a student will incur is most likely to be rent. This, of course, is a variable expense. Students may lessen their housing costs by sharing an apartment or house with one or more roommates, by boarding in a private home, or by living with relatives in the Washington area. The neighborhood in which you choose to live and the size and features of your selected accommodation will largely determine the rent you will pay, and rents range considerably. Food

Food prices in the Washington area are comparable to those in other major metropolitan areas. Appetites will vary, as will tastes in food.

Books, Equipment and Supplies

Medical books are expensive---much more expensive than books you purchased as an undergraduate student. You can save money by purchasing used books or by using library copies, when appropriate and available. Each student will also be required to purchase or otherwise acquire the following items:

1. Long laboratory coat (freshmen and sophomores)
2. Dissection kit (freshmen)
3. White uniform with badges bearing the student's name (sophomores, juniors and seniors)
4. Physical diagnosis equipment (sophomores)

It is important to note here that each entering medical student is provided a laptop computer by the College of Medicine. The cost of the laptop, as well as required software and technical support, is included in tuition and fees.

Local Transportation

Use of public transportation is encouraged, when practical. There are bus and subway routes with stops near campus. If a car becomes necessary, plan to purchase it using your own earnings or resources. Car notes are not an allowable expense for a financial aid budget adjustment.

Personal Expenses

As a student living on your own, you will need to purchase your own toiletries and clothes. You will be expected to be clean and professional in appearance at all times. Laundering and dry cleaning of apparel is essential. Recreation activities are another expected personal expense.

Out of Town Travel

Amounts required for travel to and from Washington, as well as for electives and residency interviews, vary so widely and it is impossible to make any general statements about average non-local travel expenses. Moreover, this is an area where we expect students and their families to assume primary responsibility.

Emergency Expenses

At some time during the year, you may incur unexpected expenses. It may be an illness at home, or it may be an uninsured loss of property. For students with no other sources of funds, the College of Medicine has an emergency loan program. Students may also borrow from this program for living expenses while awaiting other student aid. Application forms are available in the College of Medicine's Financial Aid Office.
