Learning Objectives:
• Describe the history of the patient-provider relationship in the United States
• Define health communication as it relates to the patient-provider interaction
• State measures and better understand knowledge, attitudes and beliefs among health care providers toward
patients with HIV
• Identify barriers to successful patient-provider communication and understand their impact on decision-
making
• State the importance of linguistically appropriate and culturally competent care for patients living with HIV
and those at-risk for HIV
• Identify interventions for health care providers to better communicate with HIV patients

We are pleased to invite you to an upcoming faculty development course designed for physicians, medical education leaders, and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals interested and/or involved in teaching communication skills, professionalism, relationship-centered care, patient-practitioner relationships and related topics.
The course offers the opportunity to learn about an innovative, collaborative relational learning model, known as the Program to Enhance Relational and Communication Skills (PERCS).
Participants will also experience and learn about additional educational strategies including:
o The use of narratives
o Videotape and discussion
o Interactive didactic presentation
o Appreciative inquiry
o Small group team-based learning
o Large group discussion
o Facilitated reflections
Difficult Conversations in Healthcare provides teaching and learning strategies for the communication skills and professionalism competencies required by regulatory organizations including the ACGME, Joint Commission, and LCME and specialty and licensing boards.
The course is also offered as a pre-course for The Harvard Macy Institute's Program for Educators in Health Professions and the Program for Leading Innovations in Healthcare & Education.

Social Worker CE Credits: 6.5 social work credit hours
