Research in my laboratory is concerned with the structure and function of bacterial and archaeal enzymes. Two NIH-funded research projects are currently ongoing: (1) characterization of fused chorismate-utilizing enzymes (e.g., anthranilate synthases and PABA synthases), and (2) characterization of streptomycin phosphotransferases, which confer resistance to the antibiotic streptomycin.

I am also engaged in scholarly work in several broad areas: bioethics; ecological ethics, especially as it relates to climate change; the science-religion debate; and the scientific legacy of African American biologist Ernest Everett Just (1883-1941). I teach or team-teach courses in biochemistry to medical, graduate and pharmacy students.
